It’s funny that you should mention the potluck wedding! I was stressing over the cost of the caterers because I do NOT want to enter into married life in debt over what should be a fun party to celebrate the beginning of our marriage – it is about the marriage and not the wedding, right?
My fiancé came up with the idea of the potluck when he saw my distress and I though, “Can we do this?” The reception is going to be pretty much just family because he has a large family and they all live in town!
We’re adding a twist to the potluck by asking our guests to bring a dish that they are either known for or that has been passed down in their family AND bring the recipe! I’ll have a notebook ready to collect all these recipes and we get a chance to try the dishes first!
I love all the advice I’m hearing as we’re preparing to start our married life together! Thank you!!
I totally agree with the ‘big wedding’ theory! A few years ago, after seeing the over-the-top lavish weddings of some friends and family end up in really short marriages, I came to the conclusion that the more money that gets splashed out on a wedding, the shorter the marriage. Priorities, perhaps?
When I get married (just let me find the guy heh heh!), as long as I’ve got something to wear and a good man by my side in the chapel, I don’t really mind what the wedding’s like!
And Jeanie – all the best with your wedding, sweetheart! And if you don’t mind, I’m going to pinch that idea – it’s fantastic. And what a lovely thought to start off a bit of your own family tradition right there and then on your wedding day! I love it!!
